I was coming to an intersection that is close to a local funeral home. As I approached, I saw the hearse go by. Of course, the long procession was on it's way behind it. The policeman who was helping sailed past to get to the next busy intersection. There were probably at least 20 - 25 cars in this procession, excluding the hearse, limo, and other funeral home vehicles.
I stopped and turned my radio down. I do this out of respect for the dead and the living who are left behind.
While watching, I noticed, on this 4 lane road with no median, that the oncoming traffic had stopped. Well, I'm good with that.
Once the hearse passed them by though, they started moving forward again.
What happened to giving them the respect they (in the funeral procession) deserve?
I see this so often. It's a damn shame. This is the last thing a stranger can do for a deceased person and his/her grieving family. It shouldn't matter that the deceased may have been a child, a respected member of the community, a politician, a policeman/fireman/emt who gave his life in the line of duty, religious clergy or a veteran of any/all of the armed forces. Everybody should pause as the procession goes by.
The only people who should be able to 'pass' in either direction should be emergency personnel on their way to/from an emergency.
It makes me angry and not a little sad that nobody pays their respects anymore.
In my city, you can't pass a funeral procession if you are going in the same direction as the procession but you can if you are going in the opposite direction. It's wrong. Wrong. Wrong. Wrong. The policemen reserve the right to ticket you if you pass the procession going the same way but why should they have to worry about it? Why should they have to abandon their post to chase down some idiot who cares nothing about anybody else?
I don't care if it shaves that whole 60 seconds off your day. It doesn't happen to you everyday. One day, it might be your loved one or even you in that hearse. Have some respect!!
